At present, it is unclear how to define invariantly the «slices» that we want. In the 3-hypersurfaces are noncompact and have topologyUxR, whereU may beSxR, R 2, S2,orS 2 with any number of «handles», which seem to apply to all known cases, we want to pick out those 2-slices which have topologyU and are in some sense «orthogonal» to theR dimension. One way may be to pick out those 2-manifolds which divide the 3-manifold into two noncompact sets, and, if they are compact, have the smallest number of «handles».
