Summary
The problem of gauge invariance of optical transitions induced by radiation is reconsidered. We show that the choice of the gauge fixes the unperturbed Hamiltonian as well as the total one. We introduce a preferential gauge in which the unperturbed Hamiltonian has the usual formH 0=p 2/2m+W(x). In the dipole approximation, the electron-photon interaction related to the preferential gauge ise E·x rather than (−e/m)A/p. We prove that the transition probabilities computed with the eigenfunctions ofH 0 are the same in both gauges to all orders, even if one omits the appropriate gauge phase factors.
