The idea of intermediate superheavy molecules has first been mentioned by the authors in various GSI-seminars 1969-70, seee.g. GSI-Berichte 72-7, 72-10.

Such sharply peaked excitation functions can also be expected for the 2p-1s spontaneous γ-transitions (proportional to (ΔE)2) of the intermediate superheavy molecules in heavy-ion collisions. Because of the same reasons as given here, the width of this excitation function is much smaller than the crude collision time would suggest. In both cases of γ-transitions and positron autoionization, however, the spontaneous emission can be enhanced by induced emission due to the dynamics (deviations from adiabaticity). The dependence of the latter on transition energies will be more thoroughly investigated in a forthcoming article byK. Smith, P. Riesenfeld et al.
