Summary
It is shown in a numerical example that false resonances arise in the resonating-group method when an open channel is neglected. They can be suppressed by a least-squares defect minimization method which has been developed recently.

After having completed this paper the author became aware of a preprint byD. R. Thompson andY. C. Tang (1973) who have calculated the α-α phase shifts including distortion functions. Here, a number of resonances shows up, most of which are presumably false ones.
