Summary
In this work the complex angular-momentum approach of the strong-absorption model (SAM) is discussed for small scattering angles too. In particular, it is observed that the method works in the whole angular range. Forϑ <ϑ c , however, the series of the residues at the poles of the nuclear partial-wave scattering amplitude is not rapidly convergent and, in contrast with the usual hypothesis, the background integral is no longer negligible. The correct behaviour of the SAM cross-section at small angles arises then just from the sum of the contribution of the series of the residues with the background integral. Owing to this fact, the complex angular-momentum approach becomes impractical in order to obtain a simple form of the SAM cross-section forϑ <ϑ c . An approximate expression of the scattering amplitude can be however obtained by means of a suitable deformation of the integration path in the complex plane of the angular momentum and by using the steepestdescent method.

In our caseη is supposed to be large. Therefore, by approximating the second term in the r.h.s. of (4.6), using an appropriate asymptotic expansion (8) of the hypergeometric function, one can obtain an estimate of the background integral.

In the angular range outside (5.13) a different mathematical procedure may be adopted. Instead of the Taylor expansion, a Laurent expansion aroundλ 0 should be used. If only the poles closest to the real axis need be accounted for, one can write\(g(\lambda ) = \frac{\Delta }{{\lambda - \Lambda + i\pi \Delta }} + \frac{\Delta }{{\lambda - \lambda - i\pi \Delta }} + G(\lambda ),\) where the contribution to the integralI B (ϑ) fromG(λ) may be evaluated by using the Taylor expansion aroundλ 0, while the contributions from the first two terms in the r.h.s. must be evaluated exactly. Here we limit ourselves to observing that the result so far achieved can be expressed in terms of the Fresnel integrals in a form very similar to that obtained byVenter (9).
