Magnetic field in the plasmasphere of a compact star

Summary

The main characteristics of the plasmasphere which is likely to surround a compact star, with a strong magnetic field and a relatively large velocity of rotation, are pointed out. Special reference is made to model for thex-star ScoX-1 and the pulsar NP 0532. A forcefree magnetic field configuration is shown to be set up in the neighborhood of the star and the equation for the relevant magnetic surfaces is derived in the axisymmetric limit where the axis of rotation coincides with that of the star’s intrinsic dipolar magnetic field. A proper asymptotic solution of this equation is obtained by considering as small parameters the poloidal angle within which current flows along magnetic field lines and the ratio of the toroidal magnetic field due to the current to the intrinsic star magnetic field.

Si dimostra che la eonfigurazione magnetica intomo ad una Stella compatta oon parametri appropriati a modelli di NP 0532 o Sco X-l è quasiforce- free con (V ×B)/B non costante. Si deriva un’equazione differenziale per le superfici magnetiche nel caso che l’asse magnetico coincida con l’asse di rotazione. Si fa uso di una teonica di sviluppo in due parametri per ottenere una soluzione asintotica dell’equazione e si danno le espressioni esplicite delle componenti del campo magnetico. Si propone un limite superiore per la corrente che attraversa la magnetosfera delia Stella.

Показывается, что маг нитная конфигурация в окрестности компактной звезды с п араметрами, соответс твующими для моделей NP 0632 или Sсо Х-1, оказывается почти с вободной от сил, с непо стоянным (хВ)/В. В том случае, когда маг нитная ось совпадает с осью вращения, вывод ится дифференциальное ур авнение для магнитны х поверхностей. Испол ьзуется техника двойного разложения для получения важног о асимптотического р ешения уравнения и выводятся точные выр ажения для соответст вующих компонент маг нитного поля. Приводится верхний п редел для тока, текуще го в магнитосфере.
