Summary
A two-level quantum point detector of the DeWitt type in uniform rectilinear motion through an infinite dielectric medium is considered. A main objective is to point out the close relationship that exists between the acceleration radiation (in a vacuum) and the anomalous and normal Doppler effects taking place if the velocity of the detector in the medium is superluminal. We work out detailed expressions for transition probabilities and rates of emitted energy, in the subluminal as well as in the superluminal cases. If the velocity of the detector is very high, it is possible to define an effective temperature for the surrounding medium.
