Nonlinear electromagnetic response of an electron liquid

  • Published:
Il Nuovo Cimento B (1971-1996)

Summary

We present a quantum-mechanical many-body treatment of the nonlinear electromagnetic (e.m.) properties of a solid-state plasma. The theory is applied to the problem of second-harmonic generation in e.m. wave reflection by a metal surface. It is shown that electron correlations can have a crucial role in the phenomenon, especially near a frequency which equals one-half the plasma frequency, and can give some hints in explaining the experimental results. The possibility of extracting spectroscopic information about electron states, from this type of experiments, is discussed in detail in the framework of a simplified theoretical model.
