Summary
By starting from the single-particle Liouville equation of motion, the technique of the linear response to a small perturbation is applied to the particles of a fluid. By choosing plane waves as single-particle unperturbed wave functions, the elementary-excitation dispersion relation is then derived. When an interparticle potential with a soft core and a small attractive tail is chosen, the dispersion relation assumes the characteristic shape experimentally seen in liquid He II. No explicit reference is made to the statistics of the particles in the fluid. Properties of the dispersion relation and some related problems are discussed.
