On the modulation of cosmic-ray nuclei with Z>2 during their propagation

  • Published:
Il Nuovo Cimento (1955-1965)

Summary

The effect of spallation and ionization loss on the relative abundances and energy spectra of cosmic-ray nuclei of charge greater than two, during their propagation in the interstellar and interplanetary space, has been determined. Comparison of the results with experimental observations indicates that cosmic-ray nuclei travel an amount of interstellar hydrogen proportional to (ε 2−1)−x (whereε is the total energy of the nuclei in terms of their rest mass) withx between 0.16 and 0.25 and with the high-energy nuclei (ε=4) traversing 2 to 2.5 g/cm2 of interstellar hydrogen.
