Summary
The pion-electron scattering cross-section as a function of the four-momentum transfer has been measured using 16 GeV/c negative pions incident on the CERN 30 cm hydrogen bubble chamber. The results are compared with theory. The overall agreement is good. A tendency, at high momentum transfers, towards lower experimental cross-sections than are expected from the theory for point-charge scattering has been interpreted in terms of an extended pion. No definite conclusion on the pion size can be drawn other than that the radius is smaller than 4.5·10−15 m.

Servendosi dei pioni negativi di 16 GeV/c incidenti sulla camera a bolle ad idrogeno da 30 cm del CERN, si è misurata la sezione d’urto per lo scattering pione-elettrone in funzione del quadrimomento trasferito. Si confrontano i risultati con la teoria. L’accordo generale è buono. La tendenza, ad alti impulsi trasferiti, verso sezioni d’urto sperimentali inferiori a quelle previste dalla teoria per scattering su carica puntiforme, è stata interpretata sulla base del pione esteso. Non si può trarre alcuna conclusione sulle dimensioni del pione, se non che il raggio è inferiore a 4.5·10−15 m.
