Summary
The inaccuracies of the various energy estimators for high-energy nuclear collisions are discussed. A new method of estimation based on a two-centre model is proposed, involving measurement of the quartile angle, δ, and catering for multiple collisions. With this modelTδ (whereT is the energy of the created particles) is shown to be dependent upon the fireball multiplicity and values ofTδ are shown to be consistent with the model and a nucleon-nucleon charged multiplicity of ≈ 10. The method is shown to estimate primary energies more in accordance with the cosmic-ray energy spectrum than the Castagnoli method and is further verified by comparison with machine energies.

Si discute l’inesattezza dei vari metodi di stima dell’energia delle collisioni nucleari di alta energia. Si propone un nuovo metodo di valutazione basato su un modello a due centri, che comporta la misura dell’angolo quartile, δ, e che tiene conto delle collisioni multiple. Con questo modello si dimostra cheTδ (doveT è l’energia delle particelle create) dipende dalla molteplicità delle fireball e che i valori diTδ concordano col modello e con una molteplicità nucleone-nucleone carica di ≈ 10. Si mostra come il metodo stimi le energie con migliore accordo con lo spettro d’energia dei raggi cosmici del metodo di Castagnoli e lo si verifica ulteriormente con il confronto a livello delle energie delle macchine acceleratrici.
