Summary
The effect of crystal termination greatly modifies electro-reflectance spectra near the direct gap of a semiconductor and breaks down the field reversal invariance of Franz-Keldysh theory. The theory of such effect is here extended to the case of a nonuniform electric field and accurate measurements of the field reversal asymmetry at the direct gap of Ge are reported for the first time. Good agreement is found between theory and experiment.
