Summary
The X-ray photoemission spectra of 3d-levels of Pd and Pd doped with several hydrogen concentrations are measured in order to determine the dependence of the asymmetry index of the lines\(\alpha = 2\pi ^{ - 2} \sum\limits_l {(2l + 1)\delta _l^2 } \) upon the hydrogen content. A decrease of α is observed with increasing hydrogen concentration. Moreover, a sizable change in α takes place when H/Pd (∼ 0.7) corresponds to the complete electron filling of thed bands of Pd. A calculation making use of a model pseudopotential screened bys-like charge density only is able to explain the whole set of data. The agreement emphasizes the role played by the free-electron-like density. The model confirms previous suggestions on the progressive filling of thed ands,p states in the palladium-hydrogen system.
