Summary
Photoelectron spectra of GeS, GeSe, SnS and SnSe are presented. Ionicities of these and other IV–VI compounds are derived from the splitting of the valences-bands and from the interatomic distances. These ionicities can account for structural trends and phase transitions within the family of average-valence-<5> compounds.
