Summary
Our starting point is a variational equation based on a Lagrangian which is only a slight modification of the usual one of the STR. When interpreted with reference to an absolute time and a flat space, this equation immediately gives us the correct advancement of the perihelion of a planet and a gravitational red-shift of the same magnitude as that observed. If we take the red-shift to be equivalent to a gravitational reduction of light velocity and rewrite, the equation, it also yields the usual value of the deflection of light. We have thus derived the three so-called «crucial effects» of the GTR from a few simple assumptions.
