On the determination of the mean life of μ⁻ mesons in Ca and Pb

Summary

The results of a series of measurements for the determination of the apparent mean life of μ⁻-mesons in Ca and Pb, carried out by means of a recently described apparatus are reported. The values obtained are τ=(35.7±3) · 10⁻⁸ s in Ca and τ=(7.3±0.6) · 10⁻⁸ s in Pb. The results are in agreement with those obtained by other investigators and with theoretical estimations.

Vengono riportati i risultati di una serie di misure, eseguite con un apparato sperimentale descritto in un precedente lavoro, intese a determinare la vita media apparenteτ dei mesoni μ⁻ in Ca e Pb. I valori ottenuti sono per il calcioτ=(35.7±3.0) · 10⁻⁸ s e per il Pbτ=(7.3±0.6) · 10⁻⁸ s. Si confrontano tali risultati con quelli ottenuti da altri sperimentatori e con talune previsioni teoriche, riscontrando un accordo soddisfacente.
