Summary
Using recently measured differential cross-sections for elastic and inelastic α-particle scattering from208Pb atE α=104 MeV, we studied the question whether the collectivities of protons and neutrons in the strong collective 3 −1 -state (2.615 MeV) are different or not. Adopting the experimentalB(E3) value and the proton transition densities from electron scattering experiments, we extract the corresponding quantities of the neutron part from an analysis of the α-particle scattering data. Significant differences revealing a different neutron collectivity are found. Furthermore, we test results of recent RPA calculations, which reproduce very well the proton density found in «model independent» analyses of (e, e′) measurements. A satisfactory description of α-particle scattering by the microscopically predicted transition densities is obtained if the neutron part is assumed to be different from the proton part, whereby a larger transition radius for the neutrons is required. On the basis of these results and of further theoretical studies, the (α, α′) cross-sections for theE2 giant-resonance excitation in208Pb are calculated.
