Summary
We start from the unitary, covariant model recently proposed by Noyes and Lindesay in which quantum and particle bind to form a state which is asymptotically indistinguishable from the particle and there is no direct particle-particle scattering. For two particles and one quantum this reduces in the non relativistic kinematic region to Yukawa potential scattering. If we further restrict the model so that the quantum cannot appear asymptotically, this defines a covariant particle-particle scattering amplitude which can be used in covariant Faddeev equations to calculate the (scalar) three-nucleon system. In contrast, if we use the model for the three-particle one-quantum sector of relativistic Faddeev-Yakubovsky equations, which retain the mesonic degrees of freedom at short distances and hence give us some combinations of two-particle off-shell effects and three-body forces, we have six rather than three amplitudes. Comparison of the two equations then provides a way of estimating mesonic effects which cannot be calculated in the «potential» approximation.
