A practical proposal for the experimental study of Born rigid motions

Summary

To determine whether or not a body moving at relativistic velocities undergoes a Born rigid motion, electromagnetic standing waves can be used. An observerO′ at rest with respect to the body sees a standing wave. The laboratory observerO (with respect to whom the body moves) counts the number of nodes of the moving wave. For a disk set into rotation, dilatation occurs even if the disk material has the maximum degree of rigidity allowable according to the special theory of relativity, as shown by Cavalleri. Therefore its motion cannot be Born rigid, and the ratio between the number of nodes along the periphery and the radius is greater than 2π. This non-Euclidean character of the geometry is perhaps verifiable by a piston of plasma which produces a standing wave by reflection and moves at relativistic speeds in a toroidal tube.
