Summary
The study, via current algebra sum rules, of the systematic dependence of π−-nucleus elastic-scattering lengths on both mass number and isobaric spin can offer a way to discard, on an experimental basis, a (1, 8)⊕(8, 1) behaviour of theSU 3⊗SU 3 symmetry-breaking Hamiltonian, together with a further check of the validity of the current algebra approach to low-energy meson processes.

In the GOR model of symmetry breaking the (3, -3 )⊕( -3 , 3) symmetry-breaking Hamiltonian is defined asH SB(x)=−u 0(x)−cu 8(x), whereu 0(x) andu 8(x) are, respectively, the singlet and octetI=Y=0 components of a scalar (3, -3 )⊕( -3 , 3) representation ofSU 3⊗SU 3.
