The first-passage problem with a non-Fickian diffusion equation

  • Published:
Il Nuovo Cimento B (1971-1996)

Summary

For a free Brownian particle whose dynamics are included by a generalized diffusion equation that retains some short-time inertial behaviour, an exact analytical result for the mean first-passage time distribution is derived. The more familiar result for the mean first-passage time in the overdamped regime, where the inertial effects are absent, is recovered from the new expression.
