Summary
A complete phenomenological description of Kl3 decays (relative decay rates, angular distributions, momentum spectra and polarizations) can be given in terms of 5 « reduced » form factor ratiosξ 0,y 0± ,x 0± with respective isospin transformation propertiesI,I 3=1/2, 1/2; 3/2, 1/2; 3/2, 3/2. Shortcomings of the well-known tests of the ΔI=1/2 rule for Kl3 decays are discussed, and a general test of the formy 0± =x 0± =0 is proposed. A method is described of extracting the reduced form factor ratios from experimental data. A relation betweeny 0± andx 0± is given for the case in which theI=3/2 currents have definiteSU 3 transformation properties.

As in ref. (4) we define |K 0 L 〉∼(|K 0〉−| - K 0〉)/√2 and assume |x +,−|≫|ɛ|, whereɛ is the conventionalCP-violation parameter.
The corresponding ratioR μ forπμν decays gives no additional information as it is related toR e,ξ(K 0 L ),ξ(K+) by a relation of the formR e/C e=(R μ/C μ)×F(ξ(K 0 L ),ξ(K+)), whereF is a known kinematical function. See, for example,B. G. Kenney:Phys. Rev. Lett.,20, 1217 (1968).

As can be seen by comparing equations (2) and (4) such cancellations can also occur for K+ →π 0μ+ ν decays if bothy 0+ ,y 0− have nonzero imaginary parts. See eqs. (2) and (3) of ref. (4) above withx +→y 0+ ,x −→y 0− .

In a similar way one can show that the symmetric (D-type) octet current matrix element 〈8|8 s |8〉 is purely imaginary, fromCPT invariance. IfCP invariance is assumed this matrix element must vanish. The octet current is then purely antisymmetric (F-type). This latter current corresponds to the usual Cabibbo octet current. Seee.g. S.
