Summary

A statistical theory is developed to treat the configuration interaction problem for the ground state of the nucleus. The true groundstate wave function is broken into a dominant component and a part which can be treated statistically. Expressions are obtained for the average and the mean-square deviation of the expectation value of some operator in the ground state using a simple model for the distribution of the coefficients of the statistical components. Within this framework it is shown why the Hartree-Fock approximation should provide a better basis for the configuration interaction calculations. Some numerical examples are also presented.
