Observation of thermal noise in a three-mode resonant gravitational-wave antenna

  • Published:
Il Nuovo Cimento B (1971-1996)

Summary

We have instrumented a room temperature gravitational-wave antenna with a prototype bimodal capacitive transducer and a conventional FET amplifier. This transducer, realized with a steel intermediate resonator, provides mass ratios μ≈10−3 both with respect to the antenna and to the light-mass (27 g), mushroom-shaped, final resonator. We briefly report some remarks on the analysis of a three-mode system and the design characteristics of the transducer. Finally, we show that the antenna has been operated for several days exhibiting a clean spectrum of thermal noise.
