Conclusions

In this paper I have dealt with some of the common features of computers, and attemped to provide an outline for developing computer systems. One might argue that given other high profile problems and a relatively inexpensive labour market in India, automation in medicine should not be of high profile problems and a relatively inexpensive labour market in India, automation in medicine should not be of high priority. While this point of view may be valid, I think if properly planned and developed to integrate computers into the existing health care facilities, the benefits could be immense, particularly in the fild of medical education, research and patient care monitoring. Although the frustrations during the initiala phase of the ’learning curve’ of computerization may be unavoidable, the final results might make the efforts worthwhile.

Hardware and Software Resources

  1. IBM, Hewlett Packard, Apple, Epson, AT & T, and many other companies manufacture a variety of PCs within a wide range of cost and efficiency. IBM, AT, XT, and Personal System models; HP Vectra, 100 and 150 Series; Apple IIC, IIE, G and Macintosh SE/30; NEC Powermate SX are some of the popular PC brands. There are several IBM PC ‘clones’ that can be bought at prices considerably lesser than the IBMs. HP Laser Jet printer is perhaps one of the superior printers in the market.

  2. IBM Application System/400 is a mid-size mini-computer that is as powerful as a mainframe. HP3000 and HP9000 are more powerful PCs. Addresses: IBM: P.O. Box 2150 Atlanta GA 30055; HP, 3000 Minuteman Road, Andover, MA 01810-1085.
