Synchronous and asynchronous formulations of special-relativistic kinetic theory

Summary

In the relativistic kinetic theory even local quantities such as densities are concerned with the problem of relativity of simultaneity. Local description of extended systems in terms of densities can be made in the framework of the usual synchronous formalism (S) or in the asynchronous formalism (A) of Cavalleri and Salgarelli. By mathematical and physical arguments, it is pointed out that the S formulation is convenient for local densities, while the A formulation is convenient for global quantities.
