Summary
The itinerant-localized (i-d) exchange interaction is compared with the localized-localized (d-d) exchange interaction in the spin-1/2 ferromagnet for a simplified but computable model, the equally coupled infinite-range Ising-like Hamiltonian including thei-d interaction. The two-time Green's function equation of motion technique is used with anticommutator Green's function and Tyablikov decoupling. The ratio of thei-d exchange energy tod-d exchange energy was found to be about 100 indicating the dominant nature of thei-d interaction in explaining ferromagnetism of the transition metals. Our theory also indicates that the Fermi energy of itinerant electrons is temperature dependent. This model yields agreement with nickel data over the entire temperature range.
