A theoretical argument against a Bose-Einstein condensate in superfluid4He

  • Published:
Il Nuovo Cimento B (1971-1996)

Summary

Recent high-momentum-transfer inelastic neutron scattering measurements on superfluid4He yield lineshapes that have been argued to be consistent with the absence of any Bose-Einstein condensation. Here we lend theoretical support to this viewpoint by demonstrating rigorously that no Bose-Einstein condensation can exist within the hierarchy of self-consistent approximations for the single-body propagator in an interacting Bose system. The implications of this on our understanding of superfluidity are discussed.
