The momentum spectrum and charge ratio of μ-mesons at sea-level-II

Summary

The sea-level momentum spectrum of single cosmic-ray μ-mesons has been measured for near vertical incidence within the range 2.34 GeV/c<p<360 GeV/c. A comparison is made between the measured spectrum and that predicted on the basis of a model involving the diffusion of particles through the Earth's atmosphere enabling a value to be ascribed to the exponent of the primary spectrum. The variation of the charge ratio with energy obtained from the present experiment is compared with the results of other workers as well as the more recent theoretical predictions. Tentative evidence is provided for an increase in the charge ratio above 40 GeV although at present the experimental data in this region prohibit drawing definite conclusions concerning the exact mechanism of the primary interactions.

Si è misurato lo spettro degli impulsi al livello del mare dei singoli mesoni μ dei raggi cosmici per incidenza quasi verticale nell'intervallo 2.34 GeV/c<p<360 GeV/c. Si è fatto un confronto fra lo spettro misurato e quello predetto sulla base di un modello che comporta la diffusione di particelle attraverso l'atmosfera terrestre, permettendo di assegnare un valore all'esponente dello spettro primario. Si confronta la variazione del rapporto delle cariche con l'energia ottenuta dal presente esperimento con i risultati di altri sperimentatori ed anche con le più recenti predizioni teoriche. Si cerca, presentando alcuni valori, di provare un accrescimento del rapporto delle cariche al di sopra di 40 GeV sebbene attualmente i dati sperimentali in questa regione non consentano di trarre conclusioni definitive sull'esatto meccanismo delle interazioni primarie.
