On the electromagnetic form factor of the pion

Summary

We analyse the formalism recently proposed by Schiff for evaluating the electromagnetic form factor of the pion. For reasons of consistency, we introduce the long-range cut-offR from the beginning and ask that the cross-section be independent ofR, i.e. remain finite whenR→∞. This requirement leads to a set of identities between partial amplitudes which must be satisfied in each order of the perturbation expansion in powers of the Coulomb interaction. Finally we show that the identity corresponding to the most diverging term—the only one that can be evaluated without specifying a model for the potentials—is in fact verified in each order. This result gives strong support to the first-order treatment of the Coulomb interaction, and to Schiff's method of which this is the key.
