Thank you for the comments on Bob Nelms’ commentary in the August issue of Practical Failure Analysis.Your comment on the Jur article is a little strong; although he did not provide a specific recommendation, he did state “given that this pump was held in standby, the submerged couplings resided in a stagnant aqueous environment. This service condition lacked the flushing action that would otherwise have served to retared the development of bioorganism colonies ....” Clearly, this statement gives some hind as to the corrective actions necessary to prevent similar failures in the future.
