Abstract

Objective. To determine the efficacy of trans-tracheal and trans-bronchial needle aspiration (TTNA and TBNA, respectively) in the anatomo-pathology diagnosis of broncho-pulmonary neoplasia.

Materials and methods. TTNA was performed when there were mediastinic adenopathies ≥2 cm and TBNA where there were endoscopically-visible lesions with normal mediastinum.

Results. In 57 patients with visible lesions, TTNA was diagnostic in 27/38 (71.0%) and TBNA in 12/19 (63.1%); single technique diagnosis in 6/57 (10.5%). TTNA was diagnostic in 13/26 patients without visible lesions (50.0%); single technique diagnosis in 11 (42.3%).

Conclusion. The use of TTNA/TBNA in bronchopulmonary neoplasia increases endoscopic diagnosis by more than 10%.
