Summary
In this note we are concerned with plane one-dimensional shock wave propagations at temperatures and densities where electronpositron pairs are produced and thermonuclear reactions or neutrino emissions play an important rôle. In order that the stellar-type plasma, in which the shock is propagated, can likely reach a temperatureT 2 high enough to start these processes, the propagation velocities must be quickly relativistic. Therefore, after accurate nonrelativisitic analysis of the problem, we have turned to the relativistic case. Among the principal results obtained, we want to emphasize the fact that the density ratio ρ2/ρ1 (which has 4 as upper limit for very strong shocks propagating in a perfect gas without radiation pressure, and 7 in a gas in the presence of radiation) can reach, because of pair formation, the value of 14 (approximately) in the nonrelativistic case; moreover in the relativistic case ρ2/ρ1 can increase without any limit. Nevertheless the gas does not become degenerate because of the increase of temperature. But, when the density ρ2 reaches values higher than 1012 g/cm3, we should take into account the transformation of the gas into a free-neutron gas; and when ρ2 is of the order of the nuclear density (⋍1014 g/cm3) the typical phenomenology of nuclear matter becomes necessarily important. We shall discuss this problem in a following paper, therefore our present considerations are valid only as long as ρ2 (proper density,i.e. measured in the particle frame) does not exceed the value 1012 g/cm3. We must however keep in our mind that these limits could be attained only by means of very strong shocks. We also discuss the effects that the thermonuclear processes, neutrino emissions and iron-helium transitions produce on the shock propagation, and the conclusion is that they are negligible (with the exception of some detonating reactions).
