Summary
By a procedure based on Stefan and Boltzmann’s laws (in finite terms) Tolman and Ehrenfest proved in 1930 that in case of thermodynamic equilibrium with a static co-moving metric −g αβ dx αdx β the pocket temperatureT√-g 00 (T being the absolute proper temperature) is constant. In the present paper at first this result is generalized to the case of a stationary co-moving metric by another procedure based again on the above laws in finite terms. Then, on the basis of this procedure, a relativistic version of Fourier’s law on heat conduction is written. This law is also characterized as one of a certain general type, which is compatible with the above laws, is linear and, in case of viscosity, satisfies an additional spontaneous condition. The above version of Fourier’s laws coincides with the one proposed by Eckart in 1940 as the simplest hypothesis enabling us to prove, in a certain theory of viscous fluids in special relativity, a relativistic version of Clausius-Duhem’s inequality. A direct relativization of Fourier’s law is preferred to the preceding proposal by various authors also in recent papers. Instead, an aim of the present work is to show the compulsory character of the preceding proposal of Eckart by reaching this same statement in a way independent of Clausius-Duhem’s inequality which, unlike the above laws in finite terms, possesses many a spontaneous relativization because it contains derivatives (a divergence). The principle of material indifference (which was enunciated recently in the classical theory of materials and is of importance especially in connection with hereditary phenomena) was carried into relativity in a spontaneous «direct» way by many an author. However the relativistic version obtained in this way is not compatible with the abovementioned result by Tolman Ehrenfest. A new relativistic version of the above principle, which realizes the considered compatibility, is proposed and some easy consequence of it is considered in the non-hereditary case.
