Instability of a neutral sheet

  • Published:
Il Nuovo Cimento B (1965-1970)

Summary

The stability of a neutral sheet configuration with respect to mirrorlike perturbations is analysed in the linear regime. An analytical expression for the linear growth rate of the low-frequency electromagnetic modes is derived using a simplified model for the particle orbits. Considerations on the actual mechanism of the instability are also given.

The high-frequency case ω/kv thj ≫1 in which one would have, from (25) an integro-differential equation for ϕ1 only, can be shown to give no instability by means of either an energy argument based on quadratic forms (Laval, Pellat (2),Schindler (7), or an analysis similar to that given here for the low-frequency case (27).
