Summary
In a previous paper (1) we reduced the problem of finding the electron distribution function (d.f.) in a partially ionized gas, under the action of electric and magnetic fields, to the solution of a nonlinear, integro-differential equation. This was done by assuming the inelastic interaction effects to be unimportant. In the present study, we provide a general analysis of these effects, including collisional and radiative excitation and (simple) ionization, and their inverse. Their influence on the electron d.f. is then reduced to the introduction of another suitable integral term in the above equation, which is now being solved by iterative direct methods together with the balance equations for the excited atoms.
