Summary
Torsion and bending tests have been carried out to obtain equioriented germanium slices with prevalence of either screw or edge dislocations having equivalent distributions. The dislocation nature was ascertained by means of the electron microscopical diffraction contrast analysis method. For control, optical observations were also made on the etch pits; an original result was reached relating to the dislocations which lie parallel to the specimen surface. Under the same shear strain, dislocations having different edge components resulted in comparable amounts; it was therefore inferred that the edge character does not afford any particular hindrance, in comparison with the screw character.

According to these observations some doubt can be cast on the possibility of obtaining specimens with single rows of dislocations, as has been assumed, for example, in studies (9) on the directional effects of the dislocations on the electrical properties.
