On the measurement of the complex spatial coherence of a He-Ne laser beam

Summary

The feasibility of determining by experiment the magnitude and phase of the complex spatial coherence of a laser beam using the recently derived inversion expression for complex spatial coherence is demonstrated. Both magnitude and phase dependence for two laser excitation levels for a wide range of correlation intervals is presented. The ratio of the degree of coherence at the two levels for a continuous range of correlation interval is evaluated yielding results consistent with other known experimental facts. The degree of coherence was found to be lower at the higher level of laser excitation. The use of the inversion expression for the experimental determination of the complex spatial coherence for narrow linewidth beams is pointed out. The difficulty in presently establishing the spatial stationarity of the beam, and its relation to the applicability of the inversion expression are discussed.

Si dimostra che è possibile determinare sperimentalmente la grandezza e la fase della coerenza spaziale complessa del fascio di un laser utilizzando l’espressione dell’inversione per la coerenza spaziale complessa, recentemente dedotta. Si presenta la dipendenza sia in grandezza che in fase per due livelli d’eccitazione del laser per un vasto intervallo di correlazione. Si valuta il rapporto dei gradi di coerenza ai due livelli per un campo continuo di intervalli di coerenza ottenendo risultati concordanti con altri noti fatti sperimentali. Si è trovato che il grado di coerenza è più basso al livello più alto dell’eccitazione del laser. Si mette in rilievo l’uso dell’espressione di inversione per la determinazione sperimentale della coerenza spaziale complessa per fasci con linee strette. Si discutono la difflcoltà di ottenere attualmente la stazionarietà spaziale del fascio e la sua relazione con 1’applicabilità dell’espressione di inversione.
