Summary
The distribution function and the radiation temperature of the electrons in a discharge tube in a static magnetic field are determined for the d.c. densities of the order of those of a subnormal glow discharge. The measurements are performed in argon, neon and helium. One finds that in the case of argon and neon the distribution function is non-Maxwellian and consequently the radiation temperature is peaked at the electron cyclotron frequency. In the case of helium the results are compatible only with a Maxwellian distribution of the electrons. The results are discussed in relation with those found by Fields, Bekefi and Brown in the case of the glow discharge for average electron energy in the range (5÷10) eV.
