Scattering of slow neutrons from molecules of the point groupC _3v

Summary

An explicit formula for partial differential cross-section is derived, describing the scattering of slow neutrons from molecules of the point groupC _3v . The possibility that the molecule may be found in a vibrational state different from the ground state, both before and after the scattering, is taken into account just in the way proposed in a previous paper by the authors. The use of the creation and annihilation operators is found quite powerful in handling the matrix elements. The average over orientations of vibrational modes is discussed, and selection rules are obtained for the transitions of the molecule.

Si ricava una formula esplicita per la sezione d’urto differenziale parziale relativa al processo di diffusione di neutroni lenti da molecole del gruppo puntualeC _3v . Si tiene presente la possibilità che la molecola si trovi in stati vibrazionali differenti da quello fondamentale, sia prima che dopo lo scattering, secondo quanto proposto dagli stessi autori in un lavoro precedente. L’uso degli operatori di creazione e distruzione si rivela particolarmente valido nella valutazione degli elementi di matrice. Infine si discute il modo di effettuare la media, rispetto alle possibili orientazioni della molecola, dei modi vibrazionali; e si ottengono le regole di selezione per le transizioni molecolari.

Выводится точная формула для парциального дифференциального поперечного сечения, описываюшего рассеяние медленных нейтронов молекулами точечной группыC _3v . С помошью метода, предложенного авторами в предыдушей статье, принимается во внимание воэможность того, что молекула может находиться в вибрационном состоянии, отличном от основного, как до, так и после рассеяния. Испольэование операторов рождения и уничтожения окаэывается очень полеэным при рассмотрении матричных злементов. Обсуждается усреднение по ориентациям вибрационных мод, и получаются правила отбора для переходов молекул.
