Summary
The quadratic Stark effect of theF-center in KCl and its field and temperature dependence are reported. The effect is interpreted in terms of a system of two nearly degenerate excited states 2P(Γ 15) 2S(Γ 1) mixed by the electric field. From the experimental results it is shown that the |2S〉 state lies 0.11 eV above the |2P〉 state and that the width of the |1S〉 → |2P〉 transition is larger than that of the |1S〉 → |2S〉 transition allowed by the field. The dipole matrix element between the unperturbed |2S〉 and |2P〉 states has a value between 1.5a 0 and 2.1a 0.

A value Δα 0/α 0=2.8·10−5 for unpolarized light and forT=77° K was reported in ref. (1). The two values should differ by a factor of 2; the small discrepancy is mainly due to partial polarization of natural light by the monochromator affecting measurements of ref. (1).
However, the experimental shape of theF-band (approximated by a double Gaussian) was used, instead of a simple Gaussian shape, for the unperturbed transition. The same results were reported by the authors at theInternational Symposium on Color Centers (Rome, 1968), p. 67.
A value of the matrix element in the same interval, though closer to the upper limit, is obtained from (12) and the value (15) ofδ. On the other hand, from the theory ofHenry, Schnatterly andSlichter one obtains values 1.2 times smaller than (16).
