The late Fernand Braudel was widely regarded as one of the great historians of the century. He had been editorial director of the journal Annales,president of the Sixth Section of the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes, founder and chief administrator of the Maison des Sciences de l’Homme, and director of the Centre des Recherches Historiques. His major works include The Mediterranean and the Mediterranean World in the Age of Philip IIand Civilization and Capitalism, 15th–18th Century.
