Jacques Barzun, prior to his retirement in 1975, was University Professor at Columbia University and special adviser on the arts to the president. He had been Dean of Faculties, Provost, and Seth Low Professor of History at Columbia University and Extraordinary Fellow at Churchill College, University of Cambridge. He is literary adviser at Charles Scribner’s Sons. The most recent of his many books are Critical Questions, A Stroll with William James,and A Word or Two Before You Go.
