Influence of mixing layer thickness on the stability characteristics of a supersonic jet

Abstract

The stability of a two-dimensional supersonic isothermal flow with a mixing layer is analyzed. Asymptotic expressions describing the stability characteristics of a thin mixing layer are derived. It is demonstrated that when the finite thickness of the layer is taken into account, the waves, otherwise neutrally stable, can show evidence of instability. The situations in which the natural wavenumbers merge with one another and with branch points of the dispersion relation are separately considered.
