Additional information

He is the author of The Cause That Failed: Communism in American Political Life(1990) and other books.

He is the author of a variety of major works on Ireland, including the standard work on the Irish Republican Army. His writings cover major aspects of political violence in Lebanon, Spain, South Africa, Ethiopia, and Cyprus. His books include The Gun in Politics; To Play the Game; Terror out of Zion;and (with Barton Whaley) Cheating and Deception,all available from Transaction.

He holds a PhD in sociology from the University of Chicago.
