His research interests include Israeli nationalism, the renewal of the Hebrew language, and the work of Max Weber and Antonio Gramsci.

His publications include Strikes in France,coauthored with Charles Tilly; The Making of the Modern Family; A History of Women’s Bodies:and Bedside Manners: The Troubled History of Doctors and Patients.

He is author of Ripe for Revolution: Conflict and Intervention in Africaand editor of Positive Sum: Improving North-South Negotiations.

He is a former vice president of the Association for the Sociology of Religion and book review editor of Review of Religious Research.His work has been published in Sociological Analysis, Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion, Journal of Ecumenical Studies, Commonweal,and America.
