Michael S. Kimmel is assistant professor of sociology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and book review editor of Transaction/SOCIETY. He has taught at the University of California, Berkeley; the University of California, Santa Cruz; New York University; and Rutgers University. He is author of Absolutism and Its Discontents: State and Society in Seventeenth Century France and England.
Recently, he was a visiting professor in Singapore; a visiting fellow at Clare Hall, Cambridge; and a guest of the Hungarian Academy of Science. He is author of Paths to Progress.
