he lives and writes in Washington, D.C. His most recent books are Conservatismand The Making of Modern Society.He has been designated Jefferson Lecturer for 1988 by the National Endowment for the Humanities; and he is completing a book, The Present Age.

Dennis H. Wrong has been professor of sociology at New York University for more than twenty years. His books include Skeptical Sociologyand Power: Its Forms, Bases and Uses.He is on the editorial boards of Dissentand Partisan Reviewand has been a frequent contributor to those journals and other publications.

Michael S. Kimmel is assistant professor of sociology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and book review editor of Transaction/SOCIETY. He has taught at the University of California, Berkeley; the University of California, Santa Cruz; New York University; and Rutgers University. He is author of Absolutism and Its Discontents: State and Society in Seventeenth Century France and England.

Recently, he was a visiting professor in Singapore; a visiting fellow at Clare Hall, Cambridge; and a guest of the Hungarian Academy of Science. He is author of Paths to Progress.
