He has served as a consultant to the president’s Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board, the National Security Council, and related agencies of the U.S. government. He has written, coauthored, or edited over sixteen books on intelligence and national security.

He was also director and served as acting deputy assistant secretary of defense for low intensity conflict. His published works include books and articles on U.S. strategic interests in the Persian Gulf, guerrilla warfare, counterinsurgency, and the war on drugs. He is currently a senior fellow at the National Strategy Information Center.
