XY gonadal dysgenesis in a Chacma Baboon(Papio ursinus)

Abstract

Anatomical description and physiological data collected on a wild-caught chacma baboon (Papio ursinus)that presented the first nonhuman primate case of “XY” gonadal dysgenesis are discussed. The animal’s dysgenetic gonadal state suggests that in Old World monkeys, as well as humans, two X chromosomes are necessary for complete ovarian development. It also appears that there may be Y-chromosome influence on stature even in the absence of testis determination.
